Mark Cuban says Mavs want to keep most of their free agents, but here’s what the team is not yet sure about

Mavs owner Mark Cuban appeared on the Ben and Skin show on 105.3 The Fan [KRLD-FM] recently to talk about the team’s offseason plans, Dirk Nowitzki’s sendoff and more. Here are some of the highlights:

On the state of the Mavericks’ roster:

Cuban: “We’ve been out [of the playoffs] three years, we’ve made some really big moves this year to hopefully cement us in the playoffs and more going forward and as I pointed to Dirk [Nowitzki] and I reminded everybody, nobody believed in us. We went down 2-0 to a Utah team and came back and won three in a row and took [John] Stockton and [Karl] Malone out.

“I see the same type of future for this team with Luka [Doncic] and KP [Kristaps Porzingis] and bringing back our other guys, we’ll extend Dwight Powell and keep him around for another three years. We think we’ve got a great core — and probably bring back Maxi [Kleber] and DoDo [Dorian Finney-Smith]. I think we can add a free agent, we’ll keep our guys for the most part, we’ll see what happens in the draft, see what’s available to us and go from there. If Luka and KP are the workers I think they are or know they are, then the future’s really good. It’s really bright.”

On if the Mavericks are going to chase a “big fish” free agent:

Cuban: “That’s what we’re discussing right now. We don’t know yet. That’s something that we go back and forth on and it really depends on who the big fish is. The certain names that are no-brainers and the certain names that are like ‘wow, that would be nice, but then how do we fill out the rest of our roster?’

“Then with the rest of the roster, do we go younger and try to find the next DoDo, the next Maxi or do we go older and find players that are more experienced, which is what we used to do. And bring in the Brandan Wrights, the [Al]-Forouq Aminu’s that we brought in for one-year, two-year deals and try to get them back in course like we did and they turned out to have great careers afterward.

“We’re trying to make decisions on how we’re going to fill out the roster. We haven’t decided yet.”

On the Spurs’ tribute to Dirk Nowitzki:

Cuban: “When David Robinson retired, we did the same thing for him. We did a little going away party and they didn’t want us to do it for Tim Duncan when we offered to do it then. We didn’t have a chance for Manu [Ginobili] or Tony Parker, so I had no doubt [the Spurs would tribute Nowitzki].

“Pop [Gregg Popovich] and I have a little bit of a relationship and I know Rick and Pop have a great relationship. What they did was first class and it was wonderful and it was fun. Part of the fun was a couple buckets that they showed Dirk making in that highlight film were over Michael Finely. So he was right there in a Spurs uniform so that added a little to the sense of humor of it all.”

On if he ever had legitimate worries about losing Dirk Nowitzki:

Cuban: “No. Never. Not one.”
