Mavericks musings: Luka Doncic vs. Trae Young for Rookie of the Year, and the NBA draft

Tim Cowlishaw, sports columnist for and The Dallas Morning News, author of Drunk on Sports and panelist on ESPN’s “Around the Horn,” answered questions about the Mavericks, in his reader mailbag. Here are some highlights.

With Luka Doncic’s struggles and Trae Young going on a hot streak, is it possible that Young steals the Rookie of the Year award from Doncic?

Cowlishaw: I can’t imagine that it’s even close. Doncic wins Rookie of the Month every month. Young doesn’t have enough time to put up enough games to overcome the dominance that Doncic demonstrated during the first 50 games of the season. All those records for teenagers, best numbers since LeBron, etc. I think it’s a done deal for Doncic.

Should Mavs fans be worried about Luka Doncic’s dip in play/knee issues?

Cowlishaw: Mavs fans should be as eager for the finish line to get here as Rick Carlisle is. This is a brutal team to watch, and it’s kind of odd that Kristaps Porzingis is treated like a piece of crystal while Doncic is diving all over the place and getting MRI’s.

If the Mavs get lucky and get a top 5 pick, who are some names they should look at?

Cowlishaw: They can only get a top-four pick, they can’t get the 5th pick. And if you get into the top four, you really hope it’s the top two and someone from Duke — Zion Williamson or R.J. Barrett. Beyond that it’s a bit of a crap shoot. Will be intriguing to see how some of the top players perform in the NCAA tournament. Texas’ Jaxson Hayes may even squeeze his way into that discussion.
