Mavs player profile: After his worst NBA season, can Courtney Lee be a contributor off the bench?

Courtney Lee

Position: Shooting guard
Age: 33
Size: 6-5, 215 pounds
Experience: 12th season

Contract: In the final season of his contract that pays $12.8 million for 2019-20

2018-19 recap: Perhaps it was a sign of age, or perhaps the Knicks’ infrequent reliance on his production played a role. Either way, Lee averaging four points, 1.6 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game ranked as career lows for the veteran, as did his shooting 41.1% from the field and 29.1% from three. Lee played in just 12 games for the Knicks before he was included in the Jan. 31 trade that sent Kristaps Porzingis to the Mavericks. He then saw time in 22 games for Dallas, including four starts.

2019-20 outlook: Some fans clamored for the Mavericks to find a way to release or trade Lee because his high salary doesn’t correlate to his waning production on the court. But the Mavericks’ efforts in free agency didn’t change Lee’s status, so he’ll enter the season as a reserve. “Roles come from knowing your game,” Lee said just after the trade brought him to Dallas. “I’m not going to go out there and try to do a lot of stuff that I’m not accustomed to doing. Anything that it takes to win going forward.”

Did you know? Lee, a 2008 first-round pick, has played for eight teams since entering the NBA: the Orlando Magic, New Jersey Nets, Houston Rockets, Boston Celtics, Memphis Grizzlies, Charlotte Hornets, New York Knicks and the Dallas Mavericks.
