Mavs player profile: Can the sharp-shooting Ryan Broekhoff earn a bigger role in the rotation?

Ryan Broekhoff

Position: Shooting guard
Age: 29
Size: 6-7, 215 pounds
Experience: 2nd season

Contract: In the final season of his contract that pays $1.4 million for 2018-19 and became fully guaranteed June 29.

2018-19 recap: In his rookie NBA season, Broekhoff didn’t often crack the rotation — he played in 42 games with no starts — but he impressed with his efficiency from deep when on the court. Broekhoff averaged four points a game and shot 40.9% from three. When given extended time, especially after the Jan. 31 trade for Kristaps Porzingis shook up the Mavericks’ rotation, Broekhoff capitalized. He played at least 13 minutes in each of the team’s last 10 games and scored in double-digits in three.

2019-20 outlook: Broekhoff doesn’t figure to earn a bigger role in the rotation as the Mavericks have added guard options via Delon Wright and Seth Curry during free agency. But the team didn’t budge June 29, when the second year contract became fully guaranteed for the season, and his 3-point shooting abilities could be an added boost from the bench.

Did you know? Broekhoff grew up in Australia and played for the national team in the 2016 Olympics.
