Mavs player profile: How Delon Wright could be a perfect complement to Luka Doncic in 2019-20

Delon Wright

Position: Point guard
Age: 27
Size: 6-5, 183 pounds
Experience: 5th year

Contract:
In the first season of his three-year, $29 million contract that pays $9.5 million for 2019-20

2018-19 recap: Despite missing the chance to participate in a championship run after the Toronto Raptors dealt him to the Grizzlies mid-season, Wright made good on his time in Memphis, where he averaged 12.2 points, 5.4 rebounds and 5.3 assists in 26 games (11 starts). His season averages of 8.7 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.3 assists were career-best marks. The Mavericks were perhaps most aware of his strong finish, as two of his three triple-doubles in the season’s final four games came in consecutive outings against Dallas.

2019-20 outlook: When the Mavericks completed a sign-and-trade for Wright in July, sending two second-round picks and the rights to Satnam Singh to Memphis, it was with his starting-caliber talent in mind. Coach Rick Carlisle said this summer he envisions Wright’s versatility will benefit the backcourt alongside Luka Doncic. While Wright hasn’t been strong through his career from three —he’s a career 33.2% shooter from beyond the arc — his height and rebounding abilities should combine well with Doncic as the duo averages a combined 11.3 rebounds per game.

Did you know? Wright’s addition means the Mavericks roster will feature two winners of the Bob Cousy Award, given annually to the nation’s best college player. Wright won at Utah for the 2014-15 season, and Jalen Brunson won at Villanova in 2017-18.
