Mavs player profile: How will Dwight Powell, one of Rick Carlisle’s ‘all-time favorite players,’ follow his career year?

Editor’s note: This is part of a series of Mavs player profiles about the 2019-20 roster.

Dwight Powell

Position: Center/power forward
Age: 28
Size: 6-11, 240 pounds
Experience: 6th season

Contract: In the final season of his contract that pays $10.3 million for the 2019-20 season — via him accepting a player option — before a three-year, $33 million extension starts in the 2020-21 season

2018-19 recap: Powell had his best statistical performance as a professional last year by averaging a career-high 10.6 points, 1.5 assists and 0.6 blocks per game, in addition to 5.3 average rebounds. After the Jan. 31 trade for Kristaps Porzingis jettisoned several starters from Dallas, he capitalized on extra playing time by averaging 13.9 points and 7.3 rebounds and earning all 22 of his starts in the final 30 games of the season.

2019-20 outlook: During his strong stretch to finish last season, Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle called Powell “one of my all-time favorite players” for his continued improvement in his four-plus seasons in Dallas. That should again be on display because Powell, a more natural center, is expected to mesh well with Porzingis and allow the Latvian All-Star to play more freely on the wing and in the frontcourt. Returning restricted free agent Maxi Kleber could also rotate with Powell for time with the starting unit.

Did you know? Powell, whose mother suffered from breast cancer and passed away in 2012, was a finalist for the 2018-19 NBA Cares Community Assist Award. He provides guidance, education and resources for cancer patients and their families through the Dwight Powell Children and Family Support Fund.
