Preseason All-Big 12 football team: Oklahoma leads with 5 offensive players, but has no defensive reps

The Big 12 conference announced its Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year on Wednesday, along with its All-Big 12 offensive and defensive teams.

All honors are chosen by media representatives who cover the league.

The Oklahoma Sooners, who are expected to be the preseason favorites to repeat as Big 12 champions when the preseason poll is released Thursday, led all Big 12 schools with five student-athletes appearing on the offensive team. Those chosen include running back Rodney Anderson, wide receiver Marquise Brown, tight end Grant Calcaterra and offensive linemen Bobby Evans and Ben Powers.

West Virginia quarterback Will Grier was chosen as the Preseason Offensive Player of the Year.

It was the opposite on the defensive side of the ball, where the Sooners had no players represented.

TCU’s Ben Banogu was chosen as the Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. He was the lone Horned Frog chosen on the team, though. Surprisingly, Texas Tech had the most players on that team, with three selections — linebacker Dakota Allen and defensive backs Jah’Shawn Johnson and Justus Parker.

Oklahoma freshman defensive back Brendan Radley-Hiles was chosen as the conference’s Preseason Newcomer of the Year.
