Zack Wheeler worked six strong innings and Kyle Schwarber hit his major league-leading 41st homer as the Philadelphia Phillies topped the visiting Atlanta Braves 4-2 on Saturday.
The Phillies evened the four-game series at one win apiece and moved within four games of the first-place Braves in the National League East.
Schwarber had two hits for Philadelphia, as did Bryce Harper, Derek Hill and Luis Arraez. Wheeler (12-5) struck out nine while allowing one run and three hits.
Atlanta, which had won nine of its last 11, managed only five hits, including solo homers from Ronald Acuna Jr. and Austin Riley. Braves starter Martin Perez (8-9) gave up four runs and seven hits in 3 2/3 innings.
Dodgers 6, Nationals 5
Tommy Edman hit a go-ahead three-run home run in the seventh inning as Los Angeles rallied to beat visiting Washington.
Teoscar Hernandez had an RBI single in the first inning as the Dodgers earned their third victory in three days without Shohei Ohtani. Edman was occupying Ohtani’s leadoff spot, while Hernandez replaced Ohtani as designated hitter.
Dodgers right-hander Tyler Glasnow tied a season high by allowing four runs over six-plus innings but didn’t factor into the decision. Left-hander Alex Vesia (2-1) pitched one inning to earn the win and Tanner Scott pitched the ninth for his 21st save.
Cubs 6, Marlins 5
Ian Happ drove in two runs, and Michael Conforto slugged a solo homer as Chicago defeated host Miami. The Cubs will go for a three-game sweep of the Marlins on Sunday.
Ryan Zeferjahn got the final five outs without allowing a run to earn his first save with the Cubs and fifth of the season. Conforto’s homer was the major league-leading 200th of the season for the Cubs.
Griffin Conine led Miami with a two-run homer measured at 430 feet in the fifth inning. Kyle Stowers added the longest home run of his career, a 442-foot solo blast, in the seventh.
Giants 9, Mets 5
Christian Koss and Rafael Devers both hit two homers to help visiting San Francisco beat New York in the middle game of a three-game series.
Anthony Molina (3-0) and five relievers combined on a five-hitter for the Giants, who halted a two-game skid. Devers homered in the first and fifth innings, giving him six in the last six games, while Oslevis Basabe and Grant McCray each homered in the final two innings. Molina allowed just one hit over his five innings.
A.J. Ewing hit a two-run homer and Brett Baty had three RBIs for the Mets, whose two-game winning streak ended. Rookie Zac Thornton (3-5) was roughed up for six runs on seven hits in five innings.
Red Sox 5, Orioles 0
Sonny Gray pitched seven scoreless innings to earn his major league-leading 17th win as Boston won its third straight against host Baltimore.
The Red Sox can sweep the four-game series Sunday. Gray (17-4), who was facing Baltimore for the first time this season, held the Orioles to three hits and three walks while striking out seven.
Baltimore finished with five hits, struck out 10 times and collected three doubles. Chris Bassitt (6-5) went 5 2/3 innings and was charged with three runs in the loss.
Tigers 6, Guardians 0
Riley Greene had four RBIs in his ninth career multi-homer game, and Framber Valdez (9-10) pitched a season-high-tying seven scoreless innings as visiting Detroit downed Cleveland.
All-Star rookie Parker Messick (11-9) had a career-high 12 strikeouts over six innings and allowed three runs on seven hits and two walks for the Guardians, who won both games of a doubleheader in walk-off fashion on Friday.
Ben Malgeri had three hits and an RBI, and Gleyber Torres and John Peck added two hits apiece for the Tigers, who outhit Cleveland 11-3.
Angels 6, Pirates 1
Yusei Kikuchi pitched six scoreless innings for his first win of the season and Josh Lowe hit a home run to lead Los Angeles over host Pittsburgh to end a three-game losing streak.
Wade Meckler doubled twice and had two RBIs, Zach Neto went 3-for-5 with an RBI, and Mike Trout added two hits and an RBI for Los Angeles. Making just his 10th start of the season after missing almost four months with left shoulder inflammation, Kikuchi (1-5) picked up his first win since Sept. 24, 2025.
Bryan Reynolds went 3-for-3 with a home run and a walk and Rafael Flores Jr. had two hits, including a double, for Pittsburgh. Braxton Ashcraft (14-6) took the loss.
Reds 5, Brewers 3
Matt McLain’s home run in the seventh inning broke a tie and host Cincinnati defeated Milwaukee following a rain delay of almost 2 1/2 hours in the fourth.
Elly De La Cruz and Tyler Stephenson also homered for the Reds, who have won three of their last four. Tony Santillan (3-4) got the win despite giving up a run in his only inning and Emilio Pagan pitched the ninth for his 21st save.
William Contreras homered for the Brewers, who had won three of their previous four. Aaron Ashby (13-3), who gave up McLain’s home run, was the loser.
Twins 6, White Sox 4
Ryan Jeffers belted a three-run homer to push Minnesota to a win over host Chicago, leveling the three-game series at one win apiece.
Kaelen Culpepper went 2-for-5 with a double, two runs and an RBI for the Twins, who also got RBIs from Kody Clemens and Brooks Lee. Minnesota right-hander Taj Bradley (11-6) allowed four runs on four hits in five innings. Right-hander Yoendrys Gomez pitched a scoreless ninth for his 21st save.
Munetaka Murakami hit a two-run homer to lead the White Sox. Colson Montgomery added a solo home run, and Miguel Vargas drove in a run. Left-hander Anthony Kay (9-8) gave up five runs on six hits in 4 1/3 innings.
Rays 6, Rangers 3 (10 innings)
Jonathan Aranda blasted a three-run homer in the 10th inning to lift Tampa Bay to a win against host Texas in Arlington.
Junior Caminero and Richie Palacios also homered to back starter Drew Rasmussen, who limited the Rangers to one run and three hits over seven innings. Tyler Wells (4-2) pitched a scoreless ninth and 10th to earn the win.
Rangers right-hander Jacob deGrom allowed two runs and four hits over six innings. He struck out seven and walked one. Joc Pederson and Evan Carter homered for the Rangers, who have lost three of four. Closer Jacob Latz (3-2) took the loss.
Blue Jays 4, Royals 3
Kazuma Okamoto’s fourth hit of the night was a tiebreaking, seventh-inning RBI single, and Toronto made it hold to win their fourth straight, beating host Kansas City to move above .500 for the first time since early April.
Okamoto’s game-winning hit came after an error by Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. extended the inning. Okamoto drove in two runs and Lukes had three hits with an RBI while Mason Fluharty (6-1) threw a scoreless inning to get the win, which moved the Blue Jays (72-71) into a tie with the Cleveland Guardians for the final American League wild-card spot.
Salvador Perez had two hits with an RBI and John Rave homered for Kansas City, which has lost five of six. Kansas City’s Seth Lugo gave up three runs on eight hits over five innings, while Toronto’s Max Scherzer allowed three runs over 5 2/3 innings.
Diamondbacks 4, Astros 3 (10 innings)
Gabriel Moreno stroked a one-out RBI single to center field in the top of the 10th inning and Arizona rallied to defeat host Houston.
The Diamondbacks squared the three-game interleague series after Moreno plated automatic runner Ildemaro Vargas with his single off Astros reliever Bryan King (2-4). Brandyn Garcia notched his fifth save. Starter Brandon Pfaadt allowed three runs on seven hits over 6 1/3 innings. Jonathan Loaisiga (7-3) pitched a scoreless ninth.
Isaac Paredes (three RBIs) singled in consecutive at-bats — the first to give the Astros a 2-0 lead in the third and the second to rebuild that two-run margin with a two-out hit in the fifth. Rookie starter Ethan Pecko gave up one run on five hits over 4 1/3 innings.
Yankees 5, Padres 1
Cody Bellinger’s two-run single capped a four-run second inning and Carlos Rodon threw five solid innings as visiting New York knocked off San Diego.
Rodon (5-3) allowed two hits and one run, walking three and tying a season high with seven strikeouts. Four relievers finished off the game for New York (81-61), which was anchored by Ben Rice’s three hits and two walks.
Padres starter Robbie Ray (11-8) was denied in his third try for his 100th career win, lasting only 2 1/3 innings and yielding five runs off five hits and four walks. It was the left-hander’s shortest start since August 2024. The Padres, who managed just three hits, scored their only run on Manny Machado’s 25th homer, making him the only player with 25-plus homers in each of the last 11 seasons (excluding the COVID-shortened 2020 season).
Rockies 10, Cardinals 7
Cole Carrigg, Adael Amador and Ezequiel Tovar had two hits apiece and Colorado rallied to beat St. Louis in Denver.
Joshua Baez and Ivan Herrera homered and finished with two hits each for St. Louis, which lost ground in the National League wild-card chase. The Cardinals are four games behind Arizona for the final NL playoff spot.
Brennan Bernardino (4-3) got the win and Jordan Romano picked up his 15th save for Colorado. Cardinals starter Matthew Liberatore (5-14) retired the first 10 batters before the Rockies scored six in the fifth inning.
Athletics 6, Mariners 2
Jeffrey Springs pitched seven scoreless innings to win for the first time since April 14 as the Athletics prevailed, further damaging host Seattle’s dwindling playoff hopes.
Max Muncy and Lawrence Butler homered for the A’s, who have won four in a row and will go for a sweep of the four-game series Sunday afternoon. Springs (4-13), who dropped 13 straight decisions after opening the season 3-0, allowed two hits, walked two and struck out six.
The Mariners lost their third in a row and are seven games behind division-leading Houston and six back in the chase for the AL’s third and final wild-card berth with 19 to play. Seattle starter George Kirby (9-11) gave up four runs (three earned) on seven hits over 6 2/3 innings.
