Anthony Cirelli scored on a breakaway off a steal 2:36 into overtime as the Tampa Bay Lightning returned home for a 2-1 victory over the Dallas Stars on Thursday night.Cirelli took off on the game-winning dash after Brandon Hagel stripped Mikko Rantanen in three-on-three play, lifting the Lightning to their season-high fourth straight win.Hagel also scored for Tampa Bay, which improved to 2-2 in overtime and got 20 saves from goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy as he moved to 16-4-3 all-time against the Stars.Adam Erne scored for Dallas, which had its three-game winning streak snapped but extended its point streak to five games (3-0-2).Jake Oettinger made 30 saves, and six-time All-Star Tyler Seguin played in his 1,000th NHL game.Following a pregame ceremony celebrating Nikita Kucherov's 1,000th point which he recorded Saturday night, the Lightning turned up the heat in the first five minutes but could not hit the twine against Oettinger, who blanked the Washington Capitals on 24 saves in Tuesday's 1-0 home win.Hagel and Erne had identical backhanded wraparounds tries four minutes apart, with each one slipping out into the slot. However, Oettinger and Vasilevskiy were up to the task of making the ensuing saves.Hagel nearly chipped in a goal from in tight inside the first period's closing minutes, but the frame ended scoreless with the Lightning up 11-6 in shots.

Thomas Harley, Stars meet Lightning in duel of streaking teams

After surviving the NHL's third annual Frozen Frenzy on Tuesday, the Dallas Stars and host Tampa Bay Lightning will bring three-game winning streaks to the rink when they meet Thursday night. For Dallas, the loss of a trio of 20-goal scorers -- Mikael Granlund, Mason Marchment and Evgenii Dadonov -- and injuries to Jamie Benn (collapsed lung) and Oskar Back (lower body) forced coach Glen Gulutzan to mix and match. Gulutzan placed center Tyler Seguin on the third line with Adam Erne and Colin Blackwell. In Tuesday's 1-0 home win over the Washington Capitals, Seguin was back on a line with Sam Steele and Mikko Rantanen and scored the game's lone goal. However, much of the jovial postgame talk was about the day's announcement of defenseman Thomas Harley's eight-year contract extension worth over $84.7 million."It was one of the coolest signings I've seen because we had heard rumblings, and before the game it was on (NHL Network) and we were all over there," Seguin said. "It was a very loud pregame. We were pretty happy, and he got a little red. But he's a great player and we're proud of him."A native of Syracuse whose parents are from Edmonton, Harley chose to play for Team Canada's gold-medal-winning group in the 4 Nations Face-Off last winter.Seguin said he has watched the 24-year-old's growth as a player."(He's made) a lot of strides. Now he has a lot of cash," Seguin joked.Wyatt Johnston leads Dallas with six goals along with four assists, while Rantanen has four tallies to go along with eight helpers, making him the club leader with 12 points. Jason Robertson has nine points (three goals, six assists). In the crease against Washington, Jake Oettinger stopped 24 shots in his first shutout and 13th of his career. The 26-year-old is 5-2-1 with a 2.61 goals-against average and a .909 save percentage in starting eight games.

Streaky Stars' winning ways face test vs. Capitals

The Dallas Stars look for their third straight win when they host the Washington Capitals on Tuesday night. The streaky Stars started with three wins, then dropped four straight before winning their last two.Washington had won six of seven before suffering its worst loss of the season, 7-1, to the visiting Ottawa Senators on Saturday. The Capitals will be without their second-leading points scorer, center Dylan Strome (two goals, eight assists), who left the game with a lower-body injury in the first period and is considered day-to-day.The visiting Stars rallied from a 2-0 deficit to beat the Nashville Predators 3-2 on Sunday after a 3-2 comeback win against the visiting Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday.Mikko Rantanen's power-play goal midway through the third period was the game-winner Sunday."Sticking with it," said Rantanen, who has four points (one goal, three assists) in his past three games. "The last two games, our last 40 minutes, have been good. Obviously, we would like to start a little bit better. We'll try to work on that, but overall, a pretty good last two periods. Earned the win."Oskar Back and Wyatt Johnston also scored, Jason Robertson had two assists, and Casey DeSmith made 23 saves for Dallas. It was Back's season debut after he missed the first eight games with an undisclosed injury."The guys stayed with it," Stars coach Glen Gulutzan said. "It's not easy to win on the road being down two, and it's not easy to win period being down two. Not a great recipe, but you'll take it."Forward Roope Hintz did not play because of an upper-body injury.Goalie Jake Oettinger (4-2-1 with a 2.98 goals-against average and .899 save percentage) is 5-0-0 with a 1.49 goals-against average (GAA) and .952 save percentage in six career games versus Washington.

Saros then blocked Joel Armia's attempt to secure the win for the Predators."It wasn't our best game," Nashville coach Andrew Brunette said. "I don't think we were as clean as we've been at other times but we hung in there. This league's a hard league to win in, and there was a never-quit attitude all through the game."Brunette said finding a way to pick up points when not playing at your best will be a key to making the playoffs."Especially in a season like this ... because of the condensed schedule," Brunette said. "You're not going to have your ‘A' game every night. We've played a lot of hockey here, and it continues (Sunday) night, and we play basically every second day. Throw in a couple of back-to-backs and that's a lot. So if you can get something out of games when you're not your best ... that will really help you as the season goes on."Dallas comes in off a 3-2 victory over Carolina, snapping a four-game losing streak (0-3-1) in the process. The Stars trailed 2-0 after the first period but rallied behind a pair of goals by defenseman Miro Heiskanen, including the eventual winner on a 4-on-3 power play at the 11:18 mark of the third period.

I don't think we've ever given up that many shots and Grade-A chances," Carolina coach Rod Brind'Amour said. "It wasn't even the shots, it was the great scoring chances. He was phenomenal, and then even in the shootout. So, he got us the two points.""Hockey is weird. We've been on the other end of a lot of those, and now we know how it feels," Brind'Amour added. "That's not great, but I'm happy here that we, obviously, got the points. The guys that were playing (were) just giving everything they had."Hurricanes forward William Carrier left in the first period with a lower-body injury, while Robinson didn't return for the third period due to an upper-body injury. K'Andre Miller missed the game due to an undisclosed injury."They're going to be out, both those guys, Robbie and Will, for what looks like an extended period," Brind'Amour said. "Tonight was a tough night for the injuries, and Miller missed, too. I don't know what's going on there. That could be a while. So, it's tough on the injury front right now."Saturday is the first of two meetings between the Hurricanes and Stars, and the first since the trade that sent star forward Mikko Rantanen to the Stars for a package that included Stankoven at last season's trade deadline.

Alex Laferriere also scored for the Kings, which ended an 0-2-2 slump and improved to 2-1-1 on the road."It's hard to win games on the road in this league, especially against teams like this," Laferriere said. "I think it shows a lot of character for our group to be able to pull that one out. It's just the beginning of the road trip that we want to end with five wins."Tuesday also marked the Kings' debut for veteran forward Corey Perry, who signed a one-year deal with Los Angeles as a free agent in the offseason. The 40-year-old, who injured his knee before training camp, had a shot on goal in 14:41 of ice time in the win."I thought he added a lot," Kings coach Jim Hiller said. "I thought he was dangerous, as dangerous as anybody up front. The intangible stuff, it's just good to have him around, he's a winner, and so that rubs off. I didn't think I would play him (that much). I think he played close to 15 minutes tonight."To me, it was a pretty amazing performance for the first time."Darcy Kuemper, Thursday's expected starter for Los Angeles, is 1-2-1 with a 2.74 goals-against average and an .883 save percentage in four games. The Kings took two of three meetings with the Stars last season. He intercepted Mikko Rantanen's clearing attempt along the left wall and rimmed it around the end boards to the other side, where Johnson collected it and sent it to Jenner below the goal line. The Blue Jackets captain quickly sent it to Fantilli in the right circle for a rising snap shot that beat Oettinger over his left arm to make it 1-0.Jenner connected on the power play to double the lead at 18:42. Charlie Coyle dished a pass from the bottom of the left circle through the legs of Stars defenseman Lian Bichsel to an uncovered Jenner in the crease on the far side for the redirect.Dallas pressured in the second period, jumping out to a 7-0 shot advantage through the first five-plus minutes of the frame. Columbus didn't record its first shot on goal of the period until nearly eight minutes in.The hosts finally broke through at 11:58 of the middle frame. Hot Kirill Marchenko leads Blue Jackets into tilt with Stars

The Columbus Blue Jackets will look to replicate the effort from their most recent outing when they visit the Dallas Stars on Tuesday.Unhappy with their play in a 4-1 loss to the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday, the Blue Jackets responded with a 60-minute effort that resulted in a 3-2 victory against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday.Columbus' 1-0 lead in the first period turned into a 2-1 deficit in the frame when the Lightning scored twice in four minutes. But the hosts tied it in the second, and Kirill Marchenko scored the go-ahead goal early in the third period. The Blue Jackets outshot the Lightning 31-24."Honestly, (the players) were looking for it," Columbus coach Dean Evason said. "I think they were accountable, which is what you want, right? It's one thing for coaches to talk and yell and point out things, but it's another thing for them to understand it and be accountable for what happened. And they did that."Marchenko set career highs last season in goals (31), assists (43) and points (74) and has started out well through the early going of the new campaign. His game-winner on Saturday was his fifth goal in five games."We want him to score goals, which he does, but we need him to continue to have that competitiveness, that two-way game (so) that he can be on the ice in all situations," Evason said. "He's done that, and he's getting rewarded, obviously, with goals as well."The Blue Jackets recalled defenseman Dysin Mayo from AHL affiliate Cleveland on Sunday, but he's not expected to face the Stars. Fellow blue-liner Erik Gudbranson rejoined the team at practice Monday for the first time since sustaining an upper-body injury Oct. 11 at Minnesota. The Stars head into Tuesday's tilt striving to get back on track after a two-game slide followed their season-opening three-game winning streak. Dallas lost 3-1 to the St. Louis Blues on Saturday after dropping a 5-3 decision to the Vancouver Canucks on Thursday.Inconsistent efforts within those games were an issue, one the Stars know they need to rectify.

Home woes vex Blues ahead of showdown with Stars

The St. Louis Blues have been the NHL's worst team on home ice so far this season. They lost their first two games at Enterprise Center by the combined score of 13-3.The Blues will try to reverse that trend Saturday night when they face the Dallas Stars to continue a four-game homestand."At the end of the day, we have a chance here where we're 2-2, turn the page and go and play a good team coming into your building," Blues captain Brayden Schenn said. "(It's) a chance for us to regroup and prove to each other that we can play hard for one another and play hard in front of our fans and give a solid effort on Saturday night."After falling 5-0 to the Minnesota Wild in their opener, the Blues won 4-2 at Calgary and 5-2 at Vancouver with goaltenders Joel Hofer and Jordan Binnington each earning a victory. The Blues finished with a strong third period against the Flames and played three good periods against the Canucks. They appeared to be trending in the right direction. Then the Blues returned home and suffered an ugly 8-3 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks."I just think through two road games, six periods on the road, we played four good periods," Schenn said. "So we need to clean up a lot of things with our habits and details, tracking, puck play, willingness to compete for one another. I think it just starts with that."Blues coach Jim Montgomery will likely start Binnington (1-1-0, .860 save percentage) against the Stars after Hofer (1-1-0, .824 SV%) allowed seven goals on 22 shots against the Blackhawks. The Stars will also be seeking a rebound performance in this Central Division showdown. After winning their first three games this season, they lost 5-3 to Vancouver at home Thursday.

Four-goal second period propels Canucks past Stars

Filip Chytil, Brock Boeser and Max Sasson scored in a span of 3:26 during Vancouver's four-goal second period, and the visiting Canucks rallied for a 5-3 victory over the Dallas Stars on Thursday night.Vancouver trailed 2-0 after one period, but broke out in the second to hand Dallas its first loss in four games this season. On the power play a Dallas push ended with Rantanen snapping a shot past Vancouver's Thatcher Demko (28 saves).Vancouver nearly got on the board less than five minutes into the second period. Opening 5-game trip, Canucks out to cool off sizzling Stars

If the Vancouver Canucks are to get back on track following consecutive losses, they must do so amid an extended road stretch. The Canucks begin a five-game road trek looking to avoid a third straight loss Thursday night and keep the undefeated Dallas Stars from opening with four straight victories for a second consecutive season.Vancouver kicked off the season in grand fashion with a 5-1 home win over western Canadian rival Calgary at home, then was outscored by a combined 8-3 by Edmonton -- on the road -- and St. Louis. The Canucks are 0-for-7 on the power play this season, while embattled star Elias Pettersson has just one point in the team's three games."We have a good group here," Vancouver's Kiefer Sherwood, who scored two of his team-leading three goals during Monday's 5-2 loss to the Blues, told NHL.com."It's obviously not the ideal start, but it'll prove our character. We have a lot of good leaders in here, and a lot of world-class talent, so we've just got to put our head down and work and be ready from puck drop."That will be imperative during this stretch of five road games in eight days. Especially against the Stars, who have scored five goals in each of their first three contests. Those wins came in impressive fashion over perennial Western Conference powers Winnipeg, Colorado and Minnesota. On Tuesday, Dallas' Roope Hintz had a goal with two assists, while Wyatt Johnston and Esa Lindell recorded one of each during a 5-2 home-opening victory over the Wild."The biggest thing is just keep playing our game, keep staying on (the opponent)," Johnston, who has a goal in each 2025-26 contest, told NHL.com."You've got to win in all sorts of ways in this league, and at the end of the day, two points is two points."

It came after Johnston, Hintz and Mikko Rantanen each peppered shots in the slot in a six-second span before Johnston collected the loose puck and skated in from the right circle to get his third of the season.Duchene scored another power-play goal 91 seconds into the second period. He took a pass from Mavrik Bourque and fired a tight-angled shot that found its way past Gustavsson.

Wild eager to beat Stars' Jake Oettinger for first time in regulation

After winning two games on the road against division foes to start the season, the Dallas Stars play their home opener Tuesday night against the Minnesota Wild, another Central Division foe.The Stars last played Saturday when they beat the Colorado Avalanche 4-3 in a shootout. Jason Robertson scored in regulation and in the tiebreaker, and Mikko Rantanen got the shootout winner against his old team in the third round to earn the second point. The Tuesday contest will be the first home game for Stars coach Glen Gulutzan, who is starting his second tenure with the club. He led the club in 2011-12 and 2012-13.Gulutzan had his team practice Monday on home ice for more than a half-hour. He recalled a time when then-Dallas Cowboys coach Jason Garrett had his players practice with loud music blaring to imitate the conditions the club would face on the road."This is where you play," he said. "Everybody talks about setting up game conditions ... so if you want to practice, you should practice in the place you play."The Stars displayed a lot of offense in their two road wins, a pair of 5-4 decisions with Robertson and Wyatt Johnson each scoring twice. Rantanen and Thomas Hartley each produced a goal and three assists to tie for the team lead with four points.Dallas goalie Jake Oettinger has yet to lose to the Wild in regulation. In 12 games against Minnesota, he sports a 7-0-3 record with a .922 save percentage and a 2.21 goals-against average. While he went 2-0-2 in four meetings vs. the Wild last season, the Team USA netminder saved 107 of 114 shots (.939) for a 1.74 GAA.The Wild not only have to travel to Dallas, but they must do so after fending off the Los Angeles Kings for a 4-3 shootout win in Saint Paul, Minn., on Monday night.Minnesota led 3-0 after one period but saw Los Angeles get three of its own in the third period. Marco Rossi, who assisted on one of the Wild's goals, was the only skater to succeed in four shootout rounds for either team.
